How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

You've been unsubscribed from the Feedback Request Service

[edit]

Hi Ezhiki! You're receiving this notification because you were previously subscribed to the Feedback Request Service, but you haven't made any edits to the English Wikipedia in over six months.

In order to declutter the Feedback Request Service list, and to produce a greater chance of active users being randomly selected to receive invitations to contribute, you've been unsubscribed, along with all other users who have made no edits in six months.

You do not need to do anything about this - if you are happy to not receive Feedback Request Service messages, thank you very much for your contributions in the past, and this will be the last you hear from the service. If, however, you would like to resubscribe yourself, you can follow the below instructions to do so:

  1. Go to the Feedback Request Service page.
  2. Decide which categories are of interest to you, under the RfC and/or GA headings.
  3. Paste {{Frs user|Ezhiki|limit}} underneath the relevant heading(s), where limit is the maximum number of requests you wish to receive for that category per month.
  4. Publish the page.

If you've just come back after a wikibreak and are seeing this message, welcome back! You can follow the above instructions to re-activate your subscription. Likewise, if this is an alternate account, please consider subscribing your main account in much the same way.

Note that if you had a rename and left your old name subscribed to the FRS, you may be receiving this message on your new username's talk page still. If so, make sure your new account name is subscribed to the FRS, using the same procedure mentioned above.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask on the Feedback Request Service talk page, or on the Feedback Request Service bot's operator's talk page. Thank you! Proper Russian name for Kitoboinaya/Kitoboynyy Bay

[edit]

Hi. I'm looking for the proper Russian name for the above bay. A 1918 work uses the name Kitoboinaya Bay, but more recent works (mapcarta) give Kitoboynyy Bay for a bay once called Kitoboinaya on the southwest coast of Simishir Island in the Kuril Islands. I'm assuming Kitoboinaya Bay, on the east coast of Gizhigin Bay, would have the same modern name? I can't even find a map of Gizhigin Bay that even labels Kitoboinaya/Kitoboynyy Bay. Any help would be much appreciated. ST1849 (talk) 20:46, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(Without looking at the map) It must be Китобойная бухта, which is Kitoboynaya Bay. Бухта (Bay) is feminine and requires Kitoboynaya. Kitoboyny Bay does not make sense. Ymblanter (talk) 21:10, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I must've just seen the name for the settlement Kitoboynyy and assumed the bay in that area had the same name. Thanks for the help. ST1849 (talk) 21:24, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

An article you recently created, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russian Empire, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). Dear Ezhiki, Gavbadger is busily filling in a number of gaps in our coverage of former and active Soviet/Russian airfields. He's just created Vypolzovo (air base), which is great!! Would you be able to confirm that it is the same airfield as ru:Дядьково_(аэродром)? Gavbadger, Ezhiki is our ace for Russian geography and organisation and changes in Russian territorial units. Stop using custom timestamps

[edit]

As WP:SIGPROB says, The timestamp must adhere to the system-generated format (HH:MM, D MM YYYY (UTC)) and must not be customized. This is necessary for clear communications and for archiving bots to function correctly. Timestamps that are customized may be considered disruptive and editors using them may be blocked accordingly. Nardog (talk) 13:29, 1 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You know, one would think that our bots would not be so poorly programmed as to not be able to handle one of the most common date formats out there, but I see lazy slackers already enshrined this into a guideline. Fine. One word if advice though: in the future you might discover that asking politely is usually going to yield you better results than being a rude ass spewing threats. Leipäsuo etc.

[edit]

Лейпясуо should not be romanized "Leypyasuo", but Leipäsuo, look at Лейпясуо.jpg. Same with Хелюля, Helylä; Янисъярви, Jänisjärvi; Вяртсиля, Värtsilä etc. etc. etc.
2001:999:408:7145:C4A7:229F:DE7D:4610 (talk) 20:22, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are you the same person who's been leaving me this message for the past ten years? :)
Here's a refresher if you are (or a response if you're someone else):
"Leipäsuo" and such is not a "romanization". It's the original Karelian/Finnish spelling. But titles of articles about places in Russia, per guidelines, either use conventional English names (for major places like Moscow that actually have one), or are romanized from the Russian spelling. Hence "Leypyasuo". Same with Khelyulya, Yanisyarvi, Vyartsilya, etc. etc. etc. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); August 31, 2023; 01:36 (UTC) 01:36, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Why then does the October Railway use the name form Leipäsuo: Лейпясуо.jpg, but not (stupid) "Leypyasuo"? --2001:999:68D:2ABB:C89D:DEA4:7AB7:CC71 (talk) 15:33, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Because that sign is in Russian and Finnish, targeting the local population and not the Anglophones this (English) Wikipedia does?—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); September 11, 2023; 15:40 (UTC) 15:40, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean? The sign is in Russian and English, because there is an arrow to the left Vyborg, Buslovskaya (with the correct romanization, because Бусловская is a Russian name, not Finnish, which would be Viipuri, Buslovskaja), so look at the picture carefully, please: Лейпясуо.jpg. To the right is an arrow to Saint Petersburg, which Finnish name is Pietari.
You cannot be ignorant of the fact that after the Winter War (1939-1940) and finally the Continuation War (1941-1944), the local population of Leipäsuo in the Leningrad region has been Russian, when the Finnish population had to move behind Finland's new eastern border: en: Evacuation of Finnish Karelia / ru: Эвакуация населения Финской Карелии.
--2001:999:68D:2ABB:C89D:DEA4:7AB7:CC71 (talk) 11:14, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The sign is not in English for the simple reason that the spelling does not match any romanization/transliteration systems of Russian used in English. If other signs in the area are "in English", it simply shows that whoever made the signs was inconsistent. Note I'm saying "inconsistent" and not "wrong", because what they are doing may very well make perfect sense in the context the signs are used. English Wikipedia, however, operates in a completely different context, and whether you agree or disagree with the exact structure of WP:RUS, there is a strong consensus that at least some of the many existing romanization systems should be used for Russian names of places which do not have a WP:COMMONNAME. None of those systems will give you "Leipäsuo" you want.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); October 4, 2023; 22:41 (UTC) 22:41, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ping

[edit]

Please let me know if the 'ping' I sent you worked. It's on Estland/Livland, from over a decade ago. 2001:1C02:1990:A900:FCB5:49EC:22CF:E773 (talk) 17:41, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In worked, yes. I'm not sure what you expect me to say though. Livland/Livonia variants are both used in English; I myself don't really have a preference and am happy to abide by whatever consensus if/when one arises. "Governorate", on the other hand, is used because we, as an encyclopedia, cover all sorts of Russian Empire's administrative divisions, and it helps to have structure, even if sometimes that leads to a less common variant being used (but let's be honest—"less common" in this case means a usage difference between two already obscure variants anyway!). The Empire had "governorates" (губернии) and "provinces" (провинции) and "oblasts" (области; often translated as "provinces"), and it can all be very confusing to an uninitiated reader as it is. Just try writing an overview article about the divisions of the Empire across its long history without standardizing the terminology and see how that goes! Starting to cherrypick governorates which happen to be better known as "provinces" and moving the articles around is just going to create more havoc for only a marginal benefit. Furthermore, there is nothing, and I mean nothing preventing us from mentioning in the article's lede and/or body that a particular "governorate" is also being referred to as "province" in literature; in fact, that's encouraged.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); August 31, 2023; 18:14 (UTC) 18:14, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Totally agree! I think since 15 years or so (maybe a bit more even), historians of the Russian empire have started to appreciate the very specific historical realities that certain administrative units brought with them. Alongside the many differences created by various types of social and legal statuses of subjects of course. So whenever someone uses 'province' because it's easy, it doesn't mean they don't understand the importance of the different terms. Depending on the centrality of the terms to their argument, they might just dedicate a kind of 'disclaimer' in the introduction. Anyway, carry on then. I simply thought you might like to hear that at least I think you were very right to call people on their naive use of google. Keep it up! 2001:1C02:1990:A900:FCB5:49EC:22CF:E773 (talk) 18:40, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:03, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
  • The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
  • Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

A tag has been placed on Belokamenny requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team
