Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/Today
See Wikipedia:Categories for deletion policies for the official rules of this page, and how to do cleanup.
Deletion of a category may mean that the articles and images in it are directly put in its parent category, or that another subdivision of the parent category is made. If they are already members of more suitable categories, it may also mean that they become a member of one category less.
How to use this page
[edit]- Know if the category you are looking at needs deleting (or to be created). If it is a "red link" and has no articles or subcategories, then it is already deleted (more likely, it was never really created in the first place), and does not need to be listed here.
- Read and understand Wikipedia:Categorization before using this page. Nominate categories that violate policies here, or are misspelled, mis-capitalized, redundant/need to be merged, not NPOV, small without potential for growth, or are generally bad ideas. (See also Wikipedia:Naming conventions and Wikipedia:Manual of Style.)
- Please read the Wikipedia:Categorization of people policy if nominating or voting on a people-related category.
- Unless the category to be deleted is non-controversial – vandalism or a duplicate, for example – please do not depopulate the category (remove the tags from articles) before the community has made a decision.
- Add {{cfd}} to the category page for deletion. (If you are recommending that the category be renamed, you may also add a note giving the suggested new name.) This will add a message to it, and also put the page you are nominating into Category:Categories for deletion. It's important to do this to help alert people who are watching or browsing the category.
- Alternately, use the rename template like this: {{cfr|newname}}
- If you are concerned with a stub category, make sure to inform the WikiProject Stub sorting
- Add new deletion candidates under the appropriate day near the top of this page.
- Alternatively, if the category is a candidate for speedy renaming (see Wikipedia:Category renaming), add it to the speedy category at the bottom.
- Make sure you add a colon (:) in the link to the category being listed, like [[:Category:Foo]]. This makes the category link a hard link which can be seen on the page (and avoids putting this page into the category you are nominating).
- Sign any listing or vote you make by typing ~~~~ after your text.
- Link both categories to delete and categories to merge into. Failure to do this will delay consideration of your suggestion.
Special notes
[edit]Some categories may be listed in Category:Categories for deletion but accidently not listed here.

November 23
[edit]NEW NOMINATIONS
[edit]Category:Animals and humans
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Animals and humans to Category:Human–animal interaction
- Nominator's rationale: Make the title less vague and more defining. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 16:17, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Predators
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Predators to Category:Predatory animals
- Nominator's rationale: Rename due to potential confusion with other types of predators. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:53, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Fictional predators
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Not all of these animals in fiction are specifically "predators". Due to the nature of fiction, some may not be. Others may only have aggressive behavior and not be a "predator" by species. I can already see some that are miscategorized simply because they are hostile and hunt the protagonist. Furthermore, the name is confusing as it may potentially refer to humans who are predators. Overall, it is too vague and potentially misleading to work as a category. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:51, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Fictional carnivorans
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Fictional carnivorans to Category:Fictional mammals
- Propose merging Category:Fictional caniforms to Category:Fictional mammals
- Propose merging Category:Fictional feliforms to Category:Fictional mammals
- Propose merging Category:Fictional xenarthrans to Category:Fictional mammals
- Propose merging Category:Fictional proboscideans to Category:Fictional mammals
- Nominator's rationale: No need for such specific scientific terms to describe fictional creatures. It is not commonly used language outside of real-life biology. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:43, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose all I don't see any reason for why getting rid of diffusion would aid navigation in these cases.★Trekker (talk) 16:02, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- In this case, there are so few subcategories that navigation is actually hindered more by diffusing them than not doing so. Rather than being able to glance at each individual family, one has to sort through confusing suborder categories with obscure terminology. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 16:25, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Fictional giraffes
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: There are three entries in this category. Two of them are redirects and one is a children's toy. None of them are articles about fictional giraffes. (Oinkers42) (talk) 15:24, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete Per nom. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:40, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Mythological Greek epic poets
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Mythological Greek epic poets to Category:Fictional poets
- Nominator's rationale: merge, only two articles in the category, this is not helpful for navigation. Skipping parent Category:Fictional oral poets as a merge target because this has been nominated too. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:14, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete Mythology is not the same as fiction, and these already seem to be in other subcategories of Category:Characters in Greek mythology by occupation anyway. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 15:46, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Fictional jugglers
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Category only has redirects. No longer needed at all. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 14:29, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:00, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Fictional contortionists
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Fictional contortionists to Category:Fictional circus performers
- Nominator's rationale: Too small a category to be merited, with only a couple characters as members. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 14:28, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Not sure if any of the articles should be in Category:Fictional circus performers. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:06, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Rajasthan MLAs 2024-2028
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Rajasthan MLAs 2024-2028 to Category:Rajasthan MLAs 2023–2028
- Nominator's rationale: It is the same term even though they started late. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 14:27, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:08, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Fictional oral poets
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Fictional oral poets to Category:Fictional poets
- Nominator's rationale: Fairly tiny category that seems like unnecessary overcategorization. The subcategory shouldn't even be in this category anyway, leaving only one article that isn't a redirect. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 14:25, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- I was the creator. Yes, the category is too small. No objection to a merge. Andrew Dalby 14:39, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Merge per above. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:09, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Fictional female robbers
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Fictional female robbers to Category:Fictional female thieves
- Nominator's rationale: Forgot to nominate this previously, but it should be merged for the same reasons as Category:Fictional robbers was previously. It is a total overlap. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 14:00, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment Courtesy link to closed CfD: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 November 15#Category:Fictional robbers. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 14:36, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Christian organizations established in the 1st century
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, the content of this category is very POV-ish. The Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church both claim to be the true church established in the 1st century, and other ancient churches will as well. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:08, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Educational organizations
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 2nd century BC to Category:2nd-century BC establishments
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 3rd century BC to Category:3rd-century BC establishments
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 4th century BC to Category:4th-century BC establishments
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 3rd century to Category:Organizations established in the 3rd century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 4th century to Category:Organizations established in the 4th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 5th century to Category:Organizations established in the 5th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 6th century to Category:Organizations established in the 6th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 7th century to Category:Organizations established in the 7th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 8th century to Category:Organizations established in the 8th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 9th century to Category:Organizations established in the 9th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 10th century to Category:Organizations established in the 10th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 11th century to Category:Organizations established in the 11th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 12th century to Category:Organizations established in the 12th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 13th century to Category:Organizations established in the 13th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 14th century to Category:Organizations established in the 14th century
- Propose merging Category:Educational organizations established in the 15th century to Category:Organizations established in the 15th century
- Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with mostly only one subcategory, occasionally two or three. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:58, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:People acquitted of corruption
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: delete, this has a high risk of WP:BLPCRIMINAL issues. This is related to this earlier discussion which is still open. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:50, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Di (they-them), Reconrabbit, and RevelationDirect: pinging contributors to earlier discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:54, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Precedural Comment If this nomination passes, I don't see a reason to keep the parent, . (I'm not adding that to this nomination though since there's already a separate nom to containerize it linked above.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 15:40, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete Per WP:BLPCAT and WP:BLPCRIMINAL. I may occasionally push the boundaries with editing guidelines, but we have policies which encourage mentioning even convictions of crimes judiciously so grouping living people who were not convicted seems to go against that spirit. (It also doesnt' seem defining, which is the standard we usually discuss here at CFD.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 15:40, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Note: I added a neutral notice of this discussion with our friends over at WP:BLP/N. - RevelationDirect (talk) 15:58, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Associated states of New Zealand
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Associated states of New Zealand to Category:Associated states
- Nominator's rationale: Category with two topics, with a subcategory and a page for each. There are only the two topics in the real world too. Category:Associated states currently has 3 subcategories and 9 pages, so will hardly be swamped. The "of New Zealand" aspect is catered for as the two topics are already in Category:Realm of New Zealand. Nurg (talk) 08:33, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:55, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:California pioneers
[edit]- Propose merging Category:California pioneers to Category:19th-century people from California
- Nominator's rationale: selectively merge, the real pioneers are already in Category:People of the Californias and Category:People of Alta California and it is an arbitrary choice to expand the pioneer period to the 1870s. Marcocapelle (talk) 13:06, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- But there are a lot of American pioneer categories. What about converting this into a container category to facilitate navigation? SMasonGarrison 23:33, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- There are also numerous states that do not have a pioneers category and frankly I think that is for the better because it is pretty arbitrary to define a cut-off year. We may well turn Category:California pioneers into a disambiguation page though. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:53, 16 November 2024 (UTC)

Category:Fictional bandits
[edit]- Propose merging Category:Fictional bandits to Category:Fictional outlaws
- Nominator's rationale: This category didn't exist until recently, it's rather duplicative with the merge target and can easily be construed as the exact same thing. Per WP:OVERLAPCAT, they should be merged back. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 19:24, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Merge or reverse merge, these are very closely related concepts. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:39, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment Banditry involves acts of extortion, robbery, and murder, typically by members of organized gangs. Outlaws are persons declared as having no legal rights, giving practically everyone the right to kill them on sight. What they have done to deserve the loss of rights is less important than their legal status. Dimadick (talk) 05:45, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- Outlaw, being out of law, is an old Roman and Germanic concept, which does not apply to modern people and fictional characters. The word outlaw has evolved to similar to bandit. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:38, 16 November 2024 (UTC)

Category:Negro league baseball venues still standing
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Negro league baseball venues still standing to Category:?
- Tagged Category:Negro league baseball venues
- Nominator's rationale: I'm not sure if this category should be deleted and turned into a list or renamed but I don't think it should stay as is. User:Namiba 19:03, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- "Still standing" does not make sense, in the end nothing stays standing. Rename Category:Negro league baseball venues to Category:Defunct negro league baseball venues and rename Category:Negro league baseball venues still standing to Category:Negro league baseball venues. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:42, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- That makes sense to me.--User:Namiba 16:08, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

Category:Plantations in the Danish West Indies
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: WP:CATNAME
- This is just a truth in advertising nomination since all 43 articles in this category are specifically sugar planations. The Danish version of the Triangular trade focused on this single crop. - RevelationDirect (talk) 00:55, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Comment, this seems to overlap with Category:Sugar plantations in the United States Virgin Islands. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:12, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Certainly open to different/broader changes. The islands were sold by Denmark to the US in 1917 and a lot of plantations crossed that date and others closed before it so I don't know if there is an elegant solution. (I don't recall seeing any founded after 1917 but I wasn't specifically looking for that.) RevelationDirect (talk) 15:46, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- @RevelationDirect: I think the best solution is to rename as nominated and to merge Category:Sugar plantations in the United States Virgin Islands into it, with keeping a redirect. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:45, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- I tagged the USVI category and notified the creator as of this timestamp to allow for the merge proposed above. - RevelationDirect (talk) 22:22, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete the more recent duplicate Category:Plantations in the Danish West Indies, as all its contents are in the 3 location-specific subcats of the other. Rename Category:Sugar plantations in the United States Virgin Islands to Category:Sugar plantations in the Danish West Indies, and add 3 parents from the deleted one: Category:Buildings and structures in the Danish West Indies, Category:Economy of the Danish West Indies and Category:Plantations in Denmark, giving credit to User:Ramblersen2. – Fayenatic London 19:36, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete/Rename (as nominator) The additional suggestions by Fl and Marcocapelle make sense. - RevelationDirect (talk) 21:03, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Fayenatic london for sorting this out. Supporting this alternative proposal. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:04, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

Category:People sentenced to death
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: This would appear to fail WP:NONDEF, as being sentenced to death is potentially temporary and can be rescinded or rendered moot. It is not a "defining trait" like having been executed is. This deletion would also include all subcategories of "People sentenced to death" besides Category:Executed people, Category:Fictional executed characters and Category:Execution survivors. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 19:35, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Category:People sentenced to death seems a proper parent of the executed, survivors, paroled and sentenced in absentia subcategories. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:33, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- There are books about their authors' stay in the death row, so being just sentenced (whether one is executed or not) might be relevant. Apokrif (talk) 22:13, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- I'd prefer this to be containerized rather than deleted, per Marco. SMasonGarrison 23:32, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- There are books about their authors' stay in the death row, so being just sentenced (whether one is executed or not) might be relevant. Apokrif (talk) 22:13, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Keep It seems quite defining as a sentence. One reason it is rendered moot is people dying from other causes while waiting for execution. Dimadick (talk) 05:32, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
- In that case they are perfectly fine in the prisoners category. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:55, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- I notice only now that the fictional subcat contains a lot of articles directly in it, and there were a lot of articles and redirects in it that actually belonged in Category:Fictional executed characters. Then it makes more sense to turn this in a disambiguation page, directing to both Category:Fictional executed characters and Category:Fictional prisoners and detainees for characters that have and haven't been executed. Category:Irish Arctic explorers
[edit]- Propose renaming Category:Irish Arctic explorers to Category:Irish explorers of the Arctic
- Nominator's rationale: C2C was opposed by @Armbrust: who didn't respond to the followup. Now only this category follows the convention FOOian arctic explorer. Siblings are Category:American explorers of the Arctic; Category:British explorers of the Arctic. And sibling Category:Irish explorers of Antarctica SMasonGarrison 02:07, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Category:Sourcebooks
[edit]- Nominator's rationale: Book publisher category containing only the publishing company itself and one affiliate. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 01:40, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- Delete, the two articles already link to each other directly. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:22, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
